MINI-INSTRUCTIONAL
basic nogi armbar from the mount
Securing a high mount on your opponent, squeeze your knees together to isolate the arms from the rest of the body. Reaching your hand through opponent’s guard, secure a tight base with your hand tightly placed on opponent’s throat. Opposite hand should be tightly secured to back of opponent’s elbow. Rotate your body, moving your weight over your own knee making sure to keep your balance.
Point your opposite foot towards your opponent’s head, so when you “lean back” pressure is maintained by your thigh on top of your opponent’s chest. Once you fall back to secure the armbar remember “Thumb to the sky makes him Cry”.
Crossing your feet will naturally force your knees apart, loosening your armbar. Keep your feet on the floor, and your knees pinched together.
MINI-INSTRUCTIONAL
far side armbar from the rubberguard
After breaking down your opponent’s base, the knee is used to keep their posture broken down. Applying pressure with your elbow forces your opponent to react, by exposing his opposite side arm.
Attack the Armbar by swinging your leg out, and pushing your opponent’s head through the space. Emphasis on squeezing your knees together, and pointing your opponent’s “thumb to the sky” will limit his opportunities to counter the attack.
MINI-INSTRUCTIONAL
omoplata transition from far side armbar
While attempting to execute a Far Side Armbar from the rubber guard position, the opponent defends by pushing the leg (being brought over head) to the mat.
Not wanting to have the guard passed, transitioning to the omoplata provides a popular option. Importance needs to be paid to “grabbing opponent’s back”, which which prevents a “front roll” counter.
Once the body has been secured, remember to kick out opponent’s opposite side arm, and position your figure foured knee into a “straight line” pointing off his shoulder.
MINI-INSTRUCTIONAL
north south choke transition from the omoplata attempt
Countering the opponent’s predicted reaction to an omoplata, allow the opponent to “Front Roll”. While he is attempting to “Roll Through” the submission secure your opponents to the mat by reaching your arm across his upper body.
Opponent’s arm should remain “Figure Foured” until position is established. Sprawling onto Opponents head creates enough space to free their trapped hand and continue transitioning into the North South position. Once in N/S clear opponents arm, and begin to walk weight back.
Choke will be secured once weight is brought from the “shoulder to the wrist”. Extra attention to the placement of the hips is needed when finishing this move. Make sure weight is sprawled squarely onto the mat. If hips are facing to either side opponent can turn chin to the side and drive to their knees for a counter.
